Zoroaster and his teachings

Zarathusra was a prophet from the Spitaman family. He is famous for writing the seventeen great hymns which are commonly referred to as the Gathas. These hymns were emotionally inspired utterances addressed to God. This style of poem recitation was an ancient form derived from the mantic tradition used by the priests as they sought to display their understanding of the divine.
His teachings and prophesies were spread orally before being committed to a written form. The basic language spoken by the locals in Persia was Pahlavi and it is this same dialect used in the original writings.

It is not entirely clear at what historic time Zoroaster fits in, however, the language of the Gathas is very ancient. It is approximated that he lived during the Stone Age which is some time between 1700- 1500 BC. This premise is based upon the primitive nature of the Avestan people, who were actually the people belonging to Zoroaster’s tribe.
It is in the Gathas that Zoroaster makes some self proclamations which come to be accepted as part of the Zoroastic doctrine. He regarded himself as ‘zaotor ‘and ‘manthran’ which means priest and a man able to compose through mantra respectively. He also proclaimed himself to be ‘Vaedemna’, which means one who knows. Indo-Iranians begun to train for priesthood at the tender age of seven and completed their schooling when one attained fifteen years of age- which for the Iranians was the age of maturity. Zoroaster became priest at this age and is said to have increased his learning through the instruction of various teachers. He gained his inspiration and sense of calling as he wandered about in search of the truth. It was during these endeavors that he witnessed disciples of the pagan sect of Daevas oppress peaceful communities. The birth of Zoroaster’s crusade came from the sense of longing for justice and the establishment of the law of Ahuras.

According to one of the Gathas (Y43), he experienced his first vision at the age of 30, referred to as the time of revelation or ripe wisdom. It occurred during a spring festival celebration when he went out to draw water for the occasion. It was then that he saw a brilliant being who proclaimed himself to be Vohu Manah- Good Purpose- and he introduced him to Ahura Mazda and five other equally radiant beings and from this point onwards he begun his prophetic relationship with Ahura Mazda. Based upon this premise he states that ‘While I have power and strength, I shall teach men to seek the right (asha) (Y 28.4).

Ahura Mazda was traditionally regarded as the most superior of the three Ahuras; who were known to be the guardians of asha. However, it was Zoroaster who was the first to declare Ahura Mazda to be God, he was also the first person to be priest and prophet of their own religion. There is a time when Zoroaster had a vision where he perceived Ahura Mazda in conflict with another equally strong being – Angra Mainyu- referred to as the hostile spirit. Their antagonism resulted from their choices i.e. one chose to do good while the other choose to walk the dark path of evil. Ultimately, man is faced with the option of doing good and bad. The exercise of choice brought about the active feud between the two forces and the eventual decision of Ahura to bring about life and death on earth.

The first act performed by Ahura Mazda according to Zoroaster’s visions was the evocation through his ‘spenta mainyu’- Holy Spirit- of six divine beings and together with Ahura Mazda they formed the heptad. The six beings then evoked other divinities which are referred to as beneficent gods. All these lesser beings strive under Ahura Mazda, the Supreme Being and they are collectively referred to as the Yaztas or Holy Immortals in the Zoroastrianism religion. There are other pagan gods called the ‘All the immortals’ who are affiliated to amoral Daevas. Zoroaster vehemently discouraged the worship of Daevas and taught that they had been possessed by the evil spirit and their cause was therefore evil-‘The Daevas chose not rightly, because the deceiver came upon them as they consulted, so that they chose the worst purpose. Then together they betook themselves to Wrath, through whom they afflicted the life of man’ (Y 30.6).The Zoroaster liturgical teachings charged man with some basic obligations. He was to adore the six lesser deities, watch over his own physical and moral well being and to care for his neighbor. This was in accordance with the Zoroastrian code of good thoughts, good words and good deeds which was actually derived from the priestly code of ethics i.e. good intention, right words and correct rituals. Moreover, six holy immortals and man have a common goal which is to fight evil in its entirety.

In the beginning, referred to as the genesis, Ahura Mazda created things in a spiritual immaterial form- menog. He then gave the immaterial form existence-getig- also known as the sentient form and this set the stage for the battle with evil, since unlike the menog, the getig was liable to attack. Angra Mainyu destroyed all the works of creation but the Holy Immortals repaired his destruction. The story of the universe is split into three times. Creation was the first time, the second time is referred to as the Mixture- the world is no longer entirely good but constitutes good and evil elements. During this period, Angra Mainyu oppresses the world with his evil disciples and only those who bury themselves in fervent worship and solemn prayer to Ahura Mazda are able to withstand these trying times. The renovation is the third time in the history of the universe and it is during this occasion that the world as we know it becomes entirely desolate – the apocalypse-in order to pave way for a new world order. This period is also known as the separation since it is characterized by the destruction of evil hence separating it from good. The separation period is an eternal moment which sees man dwelling in peace and harmony with Ahura Mazda and all the Yaztas.
Death is a time when man leaves his material form (getig) and returns to his original spiritual state (menog). As each man transcends to the spirit form, they are judged by Mithra, the senior judge. He bears the scales of justice upon which a man’s thoughts, words and deeds are weighed. If the good outweigh the bad, the soul is judged worthy of paradise but if the bad is heavier one is thrown to hell, “ the dwelling place of worst purpose” (Y 32.13), where the wicked endure a ‘long age of misery, of darkness, ill food and the crying of woe’ (Y 31.20). However, the souls in paradise do not experience perfect bliss until the period of renovation when they shall be resurrected. Zoroaster was the first to preach the gospel of spiritual concepts such as the individual judgment, heaven and hell, the future resurrection of the body, the last judgment and eternal life. These doctrines were further adopted by various religious orders such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Therefore, these religions are deemed credible by virtue of Zoroastrianism faith which is emphasizes on righteousness through good works.

IN VITRO FERTILIZATION PROCEDURES

In Vitro Fertilization is a scientific procedure which involves the egg of a female partner being mingled with the sperm of the male partner in artificial conditions created to emulate the environment of the mother’s natural womb. In due time, the resulting embryo is harvested and returned in to the female womb for the last stages of pregnancy. It may involve injecting the patient with a series of fertility treatment – for egg stimulation- during the preliminary stages.

The In Vitro Fertilization treatment is not full proof and like any other scientific advancement there are side effects and instances of failure. However, there are some success stories that should not be ignored. In any case the patient seeking this treatment has to bear in mind what they are getting in to, choose their sperm banks or egg donor clinics, choose the appropriate clinic based on their success rates and guard from controllable situations that contribute to the failure of the procedure- this include stress and age.

Some clinics and hospitals publish the success rates of their In Vitro Fertilization procedures in public posters displayed on the clinic walls or in their official websites. These help in increasing the confidence levels of the patient. The results of these procedures are usually classified into two: Chemical testing and Clinical testing.
These tests help determine the success of the pregnancy and are actually one of the statistics you want to consider before venturing into the procedure. Successful clinical tests in most cases lead to live births.

Another basic factor that determines the success of In Vitro Fertilization is the age of the patient going through the treatment. It is advisable that a person willing to have children in future determine their fertility status while they are still young. Some of the complications associated with infertility can be easily remedied and enable their victims to be capable of natural births. However, lingering until you are in the sensitive age bracket of 35 can be detrimental. At this point most of the cases can be cured and the only option is taking the artificial treatment. The other thing to note is that even this procedure favors the young for those above 35 have low chances of successful delivery.

For those who dream of having a family in future but are infertile, all hope is not lost. Science has a remedy for what nature renders impossible. This is through the In Vitro Fertilization. However, one should factor a few things before going for treatment. These include the clinic they are going to for treatment, the statistics of the procedure and last but not least the controllable conditions that lead to the failure of the procedure. It is not too much to ask the patient to remain calm and for them to diagnose their infertility problems early enough for them to have a successful live birth. After all this scientific birth procedure is a God sent and we are lucky it works.

The Illuminati

The Illuminati came into being when extraterrestrial genes were interbred with human DNA. Although, this is said to have happened thousands of years ago, the most acceptable truth about the Illuminati is the one of a law professor called Adam Weishaupt. He is said to have formed the Illuminati in Bavaria on the 1st May 1776. This social group said to have recruited mainly scholars and masons, later expanded to the outskirts of Europe and later worldwide.

Adam Weishaupt abandoned Christian life and went out on a mission to form his own kind of society. The main mission of the Illuminati was to rule over the world and to render extinct all religions and forms of governments. The Bavarian government came under new rule in the 1980’s and immediately an edict was published, overruling the formation of all secret societies. This is what forced the Illuminati to retreat away from the public vicinity.
Since the objective of the Illuminati is to rule over the world as the only single governing unit, they purpose to achieve this by pitting people against each other and emerging as the saving grace. In light of this, the Illuminati have claimed responsibility to the French revolution, Napoleonic wars, the First and Second World Wars. Pitting regions against each other with the ultimate goal of coming up with one governing unit i.e. the League of Nations and the current United Nations.

The 21st century is said to be the D-day on the Illuminati calendar. In the course of this period there will be war and disruption of power resulting in the 3rd world war. The Christians and Muslims will fight against each other and in the end the Illuminati will rise to prevent all the bloodshed and establish satanic rule in the world. Currently, this group is said to be in the preliminary stages of recruitment and is targeting renowned and famous personalities to do their bidding for them.

"Weed"

Marijuana is created from the dried leaves of the hemp plant. The name “marijuana” is derived from Mexican military slang for a prostitute or brothel. There are over 200 slang terms for marijuana in the popular vernacular. The most common names include: pot, grass, weed, hash, ganja, high grade, kaya and sinsemilla. The scientific name for marijuana is Cannabis.
Several drug types can be produced from the cannabis plant. The common types being herbal cannabis (produced from leaves and flowers of the plant), cannabis resin commonly referred to as hashish (a pressed secretion of the plant) and sensimilia – Spanish for without seeds (made from the unfertilized buds of the female plant.

Marijuana is said to be useful medicine for nausea, rheumatism and labor pains. Strong supporters of the drug believe it has significant value for those suffering from AIDS, glaucoma, cancer and epilepsy. In fact, several studies have been published that support and document this belief. The hemp plant which produces marijuana has a lot of other uses. When harvested, this plant can be used for clothing, sails and rope. It is a noteworthy fact that the two drafts of the United States Declaration of Independence were written on paper made from hemp.

The cannabis plant can grow in nearly any environment hence its growth in almost every part of the world. Marijuana was first used as a medicinal drug in 2737BC by Chinese emperor Shen Nung. The Emperor witnessed first hand, the drug effectiveness in treating the pains of rheumatism and gout.
Marijuana is the most common illegal drug used in the United States of America. After alcohol, it is the most popular recreational or mood altering drug used worldwide. In 1996, California became the first US State to legally allow medical marijuana for patients. In 2003, Canada became the 1st Country in the world to offer medical marijuana to pain suffering patients.

The use of Cannabis has been highly justified by many. In fact, popular icons such as artists and actors are known to be using or to have ever used the drug at some point. The irony is that most of these individuals are high achievers in their professions which could act as further proof to critics that marijuana is not that bad.According to Rastafarians, marijuana is the healing of the nations. It is usually attributed to have the ability to make the truth more clear. They also consider it as a way of being close to nature. Smoking marijuana symbolizes the burning of the corruption from the human heart – “the herb is the key to new understanding of the self, the universe and God. The vehicle to cosmic consciousness.”

The primary active ingredient in marijuana is THC (delta 9 tetrhydrocannabinol). The THC ingredient in marijuana acts on cannabinoid receptors on our nerve cells and influences the activity of these cells. Many of these receptors are found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception and co-ordinated movement.
Marijuana also increases the heart beat by 20 to 50 beats per minute within a few minutes of smoking it. The risk involved is a major heart attack. Moreover, the marijuana smoke has more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke and since smokers inhale deeper and hold the smoke in their lungs longer than tobacco smokers, their lungs are more exposed to the harmful properties of the smoke.
Smokers of marijuana have a high risk of cancer than tobacco smokers. The marijuana smoke contains 3 times the amount of tar found in tobacco smoke and 50 percent more carcinogens.

Inspite of all the facts that point to the harmful effects of marijuana, most of the findings and assumptions are not full proof. Research into the marijuana menace has not been utterly conclusive though some of it has borne some undeniable concerns. However, the ultimate bottom line is that marijuana is a drug that can both harm as well as cure its consumer.

Fear

Fear is an emotion that exists in every form of life. Insects, animals and even humans exhibit fear in specific conditions, circumstances or instances. Fear has been a major area of concern in religion, science and even history, whereby scholars seek to understand, justify and even provide a remedy to this emotion.

Fear can be an adaptive response. It prepares our bodies to flee danger, fear of real or imagined enemies binds people together, and fear of injury protects us from harm. Fear of retaliation constrains us from harming one another. People can be afraid of almost anything.
Psychologists, through their extensive study of learning, have come to the fascinating conclusion that we can learn to fear almost anything. Through conditioning the short list of naturally painful and frightening events can rise into a long list of possible human fears.

Fears can also arise through observation i.e. learning by observation. This means that the fears of our parents and friends can be transformed into our own fears.
Recent studies show that fear is hereditary. We humans are quick to learn and slowly unlearn to fear wild animals and natural phenomena- fears that probably helped our ancestors survive. We are less predisposed to fear cars, electricity and bombs, which in modern society are far more dangerous
( Lumsden & Wilson, 1983; Mc Nally, 1987 )
Some biological predisposed fears develop with little or no learning- Most people are horrified the first time they see a corpse or a mutilated human body.
Some people’s fears of specific things, such as heights, are greater than others. When fears of certain things or events surpass a certain level, they are referred to as phobias.
People who tend to thrive on risk make common and naturally occurring fears seem like child play. These individuals express no fear in the face of terrifying or blood curdling situations, occurrences or things. Instead, they manage to keep their cool. Astronauts, adventurers, con artists and killers are classic examples of fearless characters.
Experience could help shape fearlessness or fearfulness but so do our genes.

Fear is natural .It is also human to fear. Your fear could be your source of courage, but it could also be your worst nightmare. We should face our fears, embrace them and learn to live with them. Most importantly we should never give in to them instead we should strive to control them. After all, fear is a human emotion which should be treated as part of the biological composition that makes one a living being.

NOTES

1. “afraid of truth, afraid of fortune, afraid of death, and afraid of each other,” observed Ralph Waldo Emerson.
2. Dogs learn to fear neutral stimuli that have been associated with shock, infants can be conditioned to fear furry objects that are associated with frightening noises, and adults can become terrified of incidental stimuli linked with traumatic experience such as rape.
3. The Minnesota study of separated identical twins found that one twin’s level of fearfulness was similar to the others. ( Lykken, 1982)
4. “He who fears all snares falls into none.” Publilius Syrus, Sententiae, 43 B.C.

What kind of thinker are you?

Thinking is a mental process that goes on in our minds. Not only can our mind be credited for most of the body processes but most importantly it is also responsible for thinking. Thinking is invisible and most of the time unconscious. It is through a person’s decisions and actions that we get the by product of their thoughts. We all think differently hence our varying approaches towards similar problems. Scholars have classified thinkers into five classes: Synthesists, idealists, pragmatists, analysts and realists.

Synthesists are the kind of thinkers that are considered weirdoes. They seem like mental cases for their theories and philosophies. They like theorizing. These kind of people have different ways of looking at the truth and are ardent debators. They view arguments as fun.

Idealists are sort of perfectionists. They are good listeners and prize morality and integrity dearly. They do what is good for others and disapprove of themselves for failing to meet their own high expectations. They are usually concerned about the future and their plans and goals are usually based on the future.

Pragmatists are the kind of guys that are often referred to as
‘happy go luckies ’. These individuals have a positive and lively view of life. They take a day at a time and avoid the “unnecessary” baggage of having to plan. These are great compromisers and are flexible enough to adapt to any situation. They are spontaneous and are "look on the bright side kind of guys". Pragmatists can handle tasks that appear otherwise impossible provided they don’t face any negative criticism.

Analysts are somewhat conservative. They are the kind of guys that attribute reason behind every action. They only see one way of doing things and usually abandon their fixation on an idea in the face of the next best thing. Analysts are concrete thinkers who hate praise. In fact they like to think about things and for them efficiency equals competence- the kind of guys who never leave their accounts unbalanced.

Realists see themselves as being realistic. They believe what they see and work with stone cold facts. Compromise, synthesis, idealism or soft ways of dealing with the world don’t auger well with them. Planning is not their strong suit and they sort of dive into things without pre-consideration.

Learning of the different kinds of thinkers goes a long way in helping us deal with them. Since synthesists view arguments as fun, it would be wise to indulge them but not to loose your grip on the real world. Try taking no offense at the tendency of idealists to expect much from you. Do not plan ahead or strategise about the future with pragmatists and take no mind when an analyst thoroughly scrutinizes your ideas. Last but not least, always have your facts when standing up against a realist.

Whatever thinker you are, you are no less than the others. However, it’s good to determine your category and seek out activities or careers and interests in line with your kind of thinking. What’s more, it doesn’t hurt to try other thinking trends, it could prove to be a worthy experience.

The Power Of Prayer!

Research and findings have revealed that prayer and meditation have a profound influence on peoples health and especially on hospital patients. People who pray and meditate daily have shown marked decreases in stress hormone levels, they age better, live longer, and handle adversity far better. Basically, people that believe in God and pray consistently live happier and prosperous lives. Here are a few reasons why:
People that pray and meditate feel a sense of belonging. They do not feel alone in the fight against the challenges of life. All major religions believe in a supreme authority they often refer to as God. They make a connection with their supreme entities through prayer and meditation. They can ask for forgiveness ,counsel, protection or even help in any areas of their lives. Scholars highly regard and associate a sense of belonging with mental health.People that are loners by nature tend to die early, not look and feel as healthy, and do not handle adversity and stress well. They tend to hold it in and then blow up on those that are actually trying to help them.

Prayer and meditation lets one detoxify their body and mind of toxic thoughts. Just like toxins we are familiar with, toxic thoughts can bring on depression, dark thoughts, hatred, mental illness and even suicide. Toxic thoughts and being alone are very negative for good mental health. By praying and meditating we are distressing our bodies and learning to put ourselves and our minds in a relaxed state. The best thing is that prayer and mediation are free. You can do it anywhere at anytime, in an elevator, in a quiet room, before going to sleep at night, the possibilities are endless. Prayer will help clean your mind of worry and stressful thoughts and replace them with thoughts of hope and serenity. Prayer before bedtime has been proven to reduce or entirely eliminate the need for sleep pills altogether in some cases.

Prayer should not be thought of as a chore. It can be as simple as the infamous Lords Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Basically in the Lords Prayer one is asking for forgiveness, for deliverance, guidance and that Gods will be done. In Matthew 7:11 it says:

So if you, weak mortals that you are, are capable of making good gifts to your children, do not you think your spiritual Father will give even better gifts to those who ask him?

We need to realize that regardless of our religion, God is infinitesimally smarter beyond any human comprehension and knows what is best for each and every one of us. God may not always seem to answer our prayers in the way we would like, but that does not mean he does not hear us. God gave us the gift of prayer so that not only could we talk to him, but so we could heal our bodies and better cope with the stresses of daily life. Through our prayer and meditation we can learn patience, forgiveness, hope, love and true happiness. This is why some biblical scholars say prayer is Gods greatest gift to mankind.
Think of it this way,a prayer a day keeps the devil, bad luck, evil spirits or anything bad or negative, out of the way.

The Health Benefits of Laughter!

Laughter is the best medicine, this is probably an expression that has turned out to be a cliche. However,do people know that it literally means what it states?
We are so caught up with life- saving up for the future, working towards a promotion and lots of other issues that are not actually important. We end up investing in our future and killing our present through depression, stress related illnesses and other occurrences that could be easily avoided through healthy living habits.
We tend to forget that what we actually possess in our control is the present for the future is not given and as the saying goes nothing is promised tomorrow today.
Laughter has many benefits and it could go a long way in ensuring that we live a happier and prosperous life. Here are some of the many benefits of laughter:
Laughter strengthens the immune system by improving blood circulation and the flow of oxygen.
Laughter has proven to have the opposite effects of depression. While depression wears your body out through ailments like high blood pressure or hypertension, laughter lowers your blood pressure thus keeping it in check. Moreover, laughter gets rid of depression by releasing the feel good hormones, better known as endorphins.
Laughter helps to keep your skin healthy and youthful. It does this by directing the flow of blood and oxygen to your face hence helping you gain a healthy and wonderful complexion.
Laughter attracts others to you. While it is a well known fact that people like to associate with those who are lighthearted and cheerful, those who are gloomy and wear long or stern faces all the time hardly drive attention their way.A good sense of humour tops the list of preferred characteristics in one's spouse for both guys and girls.
One good joke a day relieves a high amount of stress and keeps your hormone at the required level for basic body functions.Look at it this way,a good joke recited to you by a friend or from a comedy you watched or even from a joke book, lingers in your conscious mind for the whole day.Eventually, you feel cheerful and in a good mood and nothing seems to dampen your spirits.
Most importantly it is important to note that it takes 7 muscles to smile and 32 to frown, and the former always gets a better reaction from the other person. Moreover, the way we respond to stressful events can be altered by whether we perceive something to be a threat or a challenge.Humour lightens our perspective and helps us view events as challenges, making them less threatening and more positive.
Whatever you do try all you can to keep your spirits up it could save you more than it could cost you.Watch rib cracking films, read a joke or even crack a joke,do all you can to elevate your mood. You will be surprised by the wonders a lighthearted spirit could work for you!

Identify the Risk Factors Linked to Heart Attack Before it Attacks You!

Author: Neelima Reddy

Heart attack is the leading cause of death of men and women in United States. Heart attack is a permanent damage to the heart muscle. There are many risk factors associated with heart attack. Know and identify the risk factors associated with heart attacks to prevent before you become a victim.
Risk factors associated with heart attack:
Smoking and heart attack:
Smoking is a major cause of heart attack. Smoking damages heart and blood vessels. Most heart attacks are caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition in which the arteries become hard and clogged.
Clogged arteries prevent in getting enough blood and oxygen to the heart and can cause chest pain or angina. When a blood clot is formed, it cuts off the blood flow suddenly in the artery and cause heart attack.
Smoking speeds up the process of atherosclerosis by damaging the cells lining the blood vessels and heart. Smoking increases the risk of blood clots because of atherosclerosis and it also causes the blood platelets to clump together.
Heart stopping news for women:
Estrogen hormone provides some protection in women from heart disease. Therefore, most women have heart attacks after menopause, especially ten years after menopause due to the decrease of estrogen in their body.
Women who have high blood pressure, metabolic syndromes, high cholesterol levels, smoke, family history of heart disease and who had their ovaries removed are prone to develop the heart attack.
Fried foods can lead to heart attacks:
Certain compounds present in fried foods can lead to heart attack. Foods high in advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can cause a short lived dysfunction in blood vessel dilation that can lead to heart attack. The foods that can lead to heart diseases are French fries, hamburgers, and other fatty foods that are cooked at high temperatures.
Lack of sleep can raise the risk of heart disease:
People who cut their sleep from seven hours to four hours or less face twice the increased risk of death from heart attacks. Lack of sleep frequently can increase the chances of heart attack. Working overtime can lead to lack of sleep, which increases the blood pressure and heart rate while chronic stress can lead to abnormalities in functioning of heart.
Diabetes and risk of heart attack:
Diabetes is a risk factor of heart attack and stroke. People with diabetes have other health problems that increase the chances of heart attacks. High blood glucose levels over time can damage blood vessels, which results in thicker and less elastic blood vessel walls and makes it more difficult for the blood to pass through.
People with diabetes have abnormal blood fats, which include lipids, triglycerides, and cholesterol that are caused by poor controlling of diabetes and diet. Elevated lipids can clog blood vessels and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
High blood pressure and heart attack:
People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart diseases because high blood pressure puts added force against the artery walls. This extra pressure can damage the arteries. These damaged arteries become narrow and harden by fatty deposits.
Damaged arteries cannot supply enough oxygen to the other parts of the body. Therefore, high blood pressure can increase the risk of stroke and heart attacks.
Preventing heart attacks:
Control high blood pressure with lifestyle modifications. Quit smoking to cut the risk of heart attack by 50 percent. Sleeping seven to eight hours is important for a healthy heart. Control your glucose levels to prevent damage to the blood vessels.
Following healthy lifestyle can help to prevent heart attack. Follow a diet rich fruits and vegetables. Watch carefully the intake of types of fat that you are taking in your diet. Lower your intake of salt. Lose weight if you are obese. Limit the intake of alcohol and other caffeinated beverages. Exercising regularly improves the fitness of your heart.

Understanding A Full Body Workout And Total Body Training

Author:

If you have been working out for some time you have surely begin to notice that some of the people that are working out on the days you go to the gym seem to be in a different state of fitness. They may all have lean strong bodies but the overall fitness level seems some how different.

If you have made it to this point then you are definitely thinking along the lines of making your body as fit as possible. Full body workouts are great and even if you have reached the level that have won you a few titles there is still more you can achieve in addition to continuing your full body workouts.

That brings us to the meaning of the term full body all together. For a novice the term loosely refers to working all of the major muscle groups in one session. These exercises are designed to work each muscle completely in that one session. Now you are at a point that you need a full body workout boost.

Switching from a full body workout to a total body regimen means that you not only do resistance training but that you also train in some of the other areas like cardio as well. Strength and cardio are fine but still that leaves a lot of the body not accounted for. Most people see cardio exercises as a fat burning tool, which of course it is. It also strengthens a muscle you cannot see and that is the heart.

If you are a bodybuilder then you cannot continue to ignore the parts of the body that are no as readily seen as those ripped abs and tight pecs. There are about seven different ways for you train for instance strength training can be done in infinite combinations and in between competitions they will keep you from becoming bored. You can explore different variations and see what benefits there are to be gained once you have achieved the benefit move along to another one.

Though a lot of bodybuilders think that they do not have time for cardio except as a way to get off any excess fat they generally do not do enough of it to really gain the heart strengthening benefits. You should attempt to include both aerobic and anaerobic exercise in your workouts at least twice a week.

Agility and speed training can add a new level to your competitive form. Any exercise that includes dexterity would be great to incorporate into a routine during your off season. People do not see bodybuilders as being either fast or especially agile. The fact is carrying around that much bulk can make you look pretty awkward. Practicing skills that improve both will help you to be more comfortable in your own skin.

Finally there is flexibility training, this is especially important for bodybuilders. This type of training involves stretching to ensure all the muscles, joints and connective tissue has full range and freedom of movement. Being flexible also helps you to prevent injuries. Muscles will shorten every year if you do not continue to stretch them the short stodgy muscles will look rather out of place on you.

GLOBAL WARMING

The phenomena (global warming) is so called because of the gradual warming up of the earth’s atmosphere and the possibility of associated changes in the global weather patterns as a result of emissions into the atmosphere of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and methane). 1
The emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is the result of production and consumption activities of those nations which burn fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas to generate electricity; this is also referred to as the greenhouse effect (The greenhouse effect is when the temperature rising because the sun’s heat and light is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere, but it can’t get out).
Sometimes the temperature can change in a way that helps us. The greenhouse effect makes the earth appropriate for people to live on. Without it, the earth would be freezing, or on the other hand it would be burning hot(the sun would be up with no atmosphere to filter it, so people, plants, and animals would be exposed to all the light and heat). However, this is just one advantage in a list of countless disadvantages.
“Global warming makes the sea rise, and when the sea rises, the water covers many low land islands. (a problem for many of the plants animals and people on the Island). The ocean are affected by global warming in other ways. Warm water is harming and killing algae (a source of food for sea animals) in the ocean.
Global warming is also destroying many huge forests. The pollution that causes global warming is linked to acid rain which gradually destroys almost everything it touches. Global warming is also causing many more fires that wipe out forests. This happens because some plant leaves can be so dry that they catch on fire.” 2
“ Africa is the continent that will be hit hardest by climate change. Unpredictable rains, floods, prolonged droughts, and rapid desertification, among other signs of global warming, have in fact already begun to change the face of Africa.3
Other impacts from increasing temperatures are already happening; Ice is melting worldwide, especially at the Earth’s poles. Sea level rise became faster over the last century; Precipitation (rain and snowfall) has increased across the globe, on average.
Other effects could happen later this century, if warming continues. Sea levels are expected to rise by the end of the century, and continued melting at the poles could add between 4 and 8 inches. Hurricanes are likely to become stronger. Species that depend on one another may become out of sync. Floods and droughts will become more common. Less fresh water will be available. Some diseases will spread such as malaria carried by mosquitoes. Ecosystems will change; others won’t be able to move and could become extinct.4
We can combat global warming by voicing the need for laws that will steer our nation toward important solutions to global warming, choosing an efficient vehicle that is least polluting, Drive less-walk where possible, replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Choose renewable energy e.g. wind and solar.5
Global warming is too serious for the world any longer to ignore its danger or split into opposing factions on it, says Tony Blair. Global warming is indeed a scam, perpetrated by scientists with vested interests, but in need of crash courses in geology, logic and the philosophy of science.6

How To Develop The Courage To Pursue Your Goal

What does it mean to be courageous?  Do you have to climb the highest peak of Kilimanjaro or go around the world in a hot air balloon to experience courage?  Do you have to stare down an angry bear, or save someone from a burning building? These are extraordinary acts of courage that most of us will not have the aspiration, or chance, to conquer.
What we all do have though, is a heart, which is the root of all courage. The word courage itself comes from the Latin root cor, which translates to heart. When your heart is filled with empathy, sincerity, integrity, respect and confidence, you possess all that you need to be courageous. Anxiety, self limiting beliefs, self-indulgence, righteousness, and regret are destroyers of that courage.
In a society ruled by self-indulgence and self-aggrandizement, everyone requires courage more than ever. We also need courageous leaders.People inspired to lead from the heart and to rely on strong, positive values and principles to make decisions that influence nations and corporations, as well as communities and families.Leadership is really what courage is all about. It means leading and acting from within. Being true to yourself and not conforming to the expectations of others. We all need more courage in our lives. At work and at home we need the courage to do what is right, even if it means personal sacrifice.
When you refuse to sign off on a dubious expense claim, when you insist on full disclosure before recommending a wage package, when you insist on a full audit of your accounting and financial control systems, you are being courageous. These and many activities just like them occur every day. It just takes awareness to see them for the bold acts that they are.
When you start living your life with more courage and sincerity, following your courageous heart, you will meet today's challenges from a place that is real and authentic. This is the basis for true personal achievement and professional success. It also sets off a positive cycle of courage. Other people admire courage and are more likely to emulate it when they see it in action every day.
Things to start doing right now to foster your personal sense of courage from a personal life coach:
When faced with a decision or problem, search your inner core for answers.
Analyze each situation using your core set of values and principles as your decision criteria.
Ask yourself, 'Is this the right thing to do, or the easy thing to do?' Choose to do the right thing.
Prepare yourself for less courageous responses to your actions and decisions.
Hold onto your convictions despite negative reactions or sacrifices.
Having courage is not always easy. If it were, doing the right thing would not even have to be defined.  Unfortunately our society is not yet at that point, but through your courage you can emerge as a leader. The kind of leader we need more of. Hold fast to your values and principles and remember that you don't have to be a superhero to live a life of courage. Simply follow your heart and be true to yourself.

Why Running Isn't Good For The Body

How in the world is running bad for the health? We've all read fitness books on how every author recommends running... but did you ever see study reports if this exercise is the best for weight loss? Now I got you thinking, read on to find out why running shouldn't be your priority.

1. Distance Runners in General Look Like Hell. Okay, so I work out for mostly vane reasons. I have met, and know, a number of newbie endurance athletes and generally speaking they look this guy: kind of dumpy and fat (naturally I mean this in the nicest possible way). If distance running was the best way to look hot naked, then running 26.2 miles would eliminate those man boobs and the spare tire... right?

2. Running Erodes Metabolism and Eats Muscle. Muscle mass is the key factor in determining the rate of your metabolism. Regardless of gender, the goal of effective weight loss must include muscle building. The loss of muscle means that your body requires fewer calories all of the time... needs fewer calories, but if you continue to consume the same number of calories your body is going to store the excess as fat.

There are two types of muscle fiber, slow twitch and fast twitch. Slow-twitch fibers, sadly, do not help in improving your body's ability and speed in burning the fats. Your fast twitch fibers are responsible for helping your run faster, jump high and are the essential keys to a faster metabolism and a hotter body.

More slow-twitch muscle fibers grow with endurance exercises. These two fibers are in a zero sum competition with one another. If one certain group deteriorates, another group rises. The more adept you get with your endurance training the more your metabolism shrinks (because you are losing muscle).

This doesn't mean that endurance training is useless. That's actually not true. If you are looking to become a good cyclists, distance runner or swimmer it's great. It's not that good for weight loss if you do not have 25 hours per week to do it. Then you have to deal with the side effect of that type of workout which is loss of your libido.

If you brood over gaining huge amount of fats, relax. Big muscles are not accidental and incredibly big muscles require the right genes and or drugs. For bigger physique and muscles, you need to have a muscle building program. You aren't going to wake up the morning after a sprint or a weight lifting session with Arnold Schwarzenegger muscles.

3. Running is Nothing but a Waste of Time Here is a question... what is the worst thing an overweight person can do to get rid of fat?

The answer... long distance running.

Aerobic types of exercises, such as running long distance is one of the least effective forms of training for fat loss. Period.

4. It's boring. What can be more frustrating and boring than doing the same thing over and over again for 30... 45 or 60 minutes at a time? I don't think so. Endurance training means you are running in a straight line for what seems like forever, what do you get but busted joints and poor results.

With sprint based intervals, a person has to be completely engaged to be fast, this means that there isn't time to be bored. It isn't just straight running, you go sideways, forwards, backwards, simple patterns, sprint the stairs and so on. There is a variety of activities, and the best part is, it only takes 20 minutes tops! There's actually no room for boredom. You get amazing results as well!

Vitamin Benefits

Author: Mario Churchill

Vitamin benefits are substantial. From multi vitamins that offer our body all of the missing nutrients we do not get from eating the wrong foods, to supplements that boost energy, stave off disease, increase libido, and build our immunity. There are many different vitamin benefits.
Most doctors will advise you to take a multivitamin supplement. A multivitamin supplement gives us the nutrients we lack in our daily diets. Many of us do not get the proper vitamins that are derived from certain foods for a variety of reasons. In the world of today, everyone is in a hurry and many of us do not eat right. In addition, many essential vitamin benefits are derived from foods that certain people do not like to eat. Our body still needs these vitamins, however, so taking a supplement is one good way to get the nutrients needed without having to eat foods we do not like.
Vitamin benefits vary as do the different types of vitamins themselves. Vitamin A, for example, has many different benefits. It is shown to be a proven antioxidant and can protect against cancer. Vitamin A is also very useful in curing skin disorders, such as acne. It can even reverse cornea damage in some people.
Foods that are high in Vitamin A contain carrots, broccoli, dairy products, greens, peaches, liver, cherries and squash. When taking Vitamin A, one must be careful about overdosing on this vitamin. Symptoms of a Vitamin A overdose include nausea, vomiting, dry skin and fatigue and may even include hair loss.
Another essential vitamin that provides wonderful vitamin benefits is Vitamin B-1. The vitamin benefits of B-1 include helping with respiratory disorders, acne, fatigue, weakness and effectively fighting off many different diseases. Foods that are high in Vitamin B-1 include broccoli, cauliflower, nuts, eggs, rice, asparagus, turkey, peas, and parsley to name a few.
Vitamin benefits derived from Vitamin B-2 include aiding the body during pregnancy as well as healing wounds and mouth irritations. Many women who become pregnant suffer from anemia and for this reason, Vitamin B-2, along with iron supplements, helps them avoid some of the fatigue that often accompanies the condition. If you have cracked lips, burning eyes, hair loss or insomnia, you may be suffering from a lack of Vitamin B-2. Speak to your doctor about your symptoms as a Vitamin B-2 supplement may be the answer to your problems.
Vitamin B-3 controls cholesterol levels and is used in combination of other medications to treat cardiovascular disease. Vitamin B-3 contains Niacin which has also been used to treat schizophrenia. If you are suffering from fatigue, insomnia, depression or poor concentration, you may have a Vitamin B-3 deficiency. Vitamin benefits from Vitamin B-3 are many and this is one nutrient that you do not want to do without.
Vitamin benefits from Vitamin B-4, which is adrenine, include alleviating fatigue, strengthening the immune system and balancing blood sugar. This vitamin helps with low blood sugar, anemia, allergies, infections, constipation and also stunted growth. Children who do not appear to be growing at a normal rate are often injected with Vitamin B-4 injections. Recent studies have indicated that Vitamin B-4 can help with cancer.
Vitamin B-5 is widely available in most of our foods and actually converts fats and carbohydrates to energy and protein. Vitamin benefits from B-5 are used in post surgical procedures as well as by those who suffer from obesity. Too much of this vitamin, however, can produce diarrhea.
Vitamin benefits from Vitamin B-6 also help convert protein and carbohydrates to energy and helps with anemia and depression. If you are suffering from depression, nausea, vomiting and even symptoms of PMS, ask your doctor about taking a vitamin B-6 supplement that may alleviate your symptoms.
Vitamin B-8 is found in liver, yeast, nuts, chocolate, chicken, eggs, mushrooms, salmon, grains and cauliflower. The vitamin benefits of B-8 are needed for growth as well as the central nervous system and skin and bone marrow. In some cases, Vitamin B-8 is used to treat certain skin disorders.
Many women who are thinking about becoming pregnant are now advised to take Folic Acid, which is found in Vitamin B-9. It is believed that the vitamin benefits of B-9 can prevent birth defects as well as treat anemia. It is advised that women begin taking supplements of this vitamin prior to becoming pregnant.
Vitamin B 10, which is Paba, is not really considered a vitamin, but is used as a sunscreen and is essential for those who wish to avoid the ultraviolet rays in the sun that can cause skin cancer. Vitamin B 10 is not used orally, but directly on the skin. Years ago, Vitamin B 10 was used to fight rheumatic fever.
Vitamin benefits from Vitamin B-12 include relief from menopause as well as anemia. It is also believed that one of the vitamin benefits of B-12 can cure warts. People who are suffering from lower back pain, mental problems, memory loss, weakness and fatigue may actually have a deficiency in Vitamin B-12. A simple blood test to measure the levels off this vitamin in your body can determine if you are indeed suffering from such a deficiency and the solution can be easily remedied with a supplement.
Clearly there are many different Vitamin Benefits from the many different types of Vitamin B. Many people take a Vitamin B complex to alleviate confusion over which vitamin B they should take. A vitamin B complex has many vitamin benefits and is usually the best choice for those who want to make sure they are getting plenty of the essential vitamins found in the B vitamins.
Vitamin benefits from Vitamin C are many. This essential vitamin is proven to ward off colds, prevent some cancers and heal wounds. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and many people swear that by taking Vitamin C, they actually ward off colds. Toxicity from vitamin C is rare as it would take very large doses to cause harm. However, excessive use of vitamin C can produce a false positive in a urine glucose test.
Vitamin D is often found in dairy products and is known to promote strong bones and teeth. It is also essential in the prevention of osteoporosis, and most post-menopausal women are advised to take supplements of Vitamin D to ward off this crippling disease.
Vitamin benefits from Vitamin E range from repairing skin, reducing smoking lung damage and helping with drug therapies for those undergoing cancer treatment. People who have deficiencies of Vitamin E may experience muscle weakness, anemia, increased infections and even fibrocystic breast disease.
Vitamin K is useful in controlling blood clots. This vitamin is found in many foods and is rarely toxic, even if taken to great extremes. Most vegetables contain this valuable vitamin.
Vitamin benefits vary from treating skin diseases, preventing sunburn, curing colds to preventing cancer. Before beginning on any vitamin regiment, consult with your physician. In many cases, a good multivitamin may be all you need to make sure that your body is getting the right amount of the valuable properties found in the above mentioned vitamins.

Real Food Vs. Processed Food

Author: Phil Tucker

As awareness increases as to the dangers of our modern diet, as obesity rates sky rocket and the number of people with diabetes rise, people are becoming increasingly concerned with the quality of their diets. No longer interested in merely eating what's available at the supermarket, people want to know what they're putting in their mouths, where it came from, and most importantly, what it's made of. How can these people educate themselves best as to their diets? What principles should they adhere to in order to ensure a healthy and active source of nutrition?

One of the best principles, the simplest and easiest to remember is to not eat anything that your grandparents wouldn't have served at the dinner table. If you pick up a product and think, ‘Wow, this is awfully new and different from anything I've ever seen,' than most probably you should put it down and walk away. That's because most processed foods today are chock full of chemical preservatives, flavorings, moisturizers, artificial sweeteners, and more. Entire industries exist to extract these additives from everything from petroleum to rock and acid. By avoiding these processed foods, you are going to avoid ingesting all these strange and artificial processed foods that are awful for you.

Instead, you should try to eat whole foods. What do we mean by whole foods? Whole foods are the kind of food that has not been processed, has not been cut, mixed, packaged, sweetened, dehydrated, or had any sort of process applied to it. A potato, a whole chicken, a salmon filet, an apple, all of these are considered whole foods. But you can buy whole ingredients as well, and make your own whole foods, cooking healthy, nutritious and delicious meals.

So there you have it. Avoid all the artificial sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, avoid all the chemical ingredients you can't pronounce, avoid things in bright shiny packaged, and in general avoid eating anything that has a lot of advertising behind it. Instead, eat natural, healthy whole foods that your grandparents would have eaten, and stay healthy and strong!

ADDICTIONS

Addiction is usually associated with cigarettes, alcohol, heroine, cocaine and most recently with gambling, exercise and food.
For a behaviour to be rated as addictive it has to be maladaptive i.e.instead of helping the person adapt to situations or solve problems,it undermines these abilities. For instance a drinker may want to cheer themselves up but in the long run end up depressed or a gambler may want to make more money but ends up being bankrupt.
Secondly, addiction is persistent.Despite the fact that it gets you in trouble you continue indulging.Addiction is more frequent engagement in behaviour.
The biggest problem facing an addict is denial. They fail to acknowledge the negative impact that their behaviours are having in their lives.
Some other people know the effects of addiction but continue anyway because they are trying to avoid facing a problem.Other reasons are because they don't know how to cope without the addictive substance or even they don't know life outside the addictive substance.
The harm or addiction most commonly comes to the consciousness of the user once they have been deprived of the substance. They go into withdrawal and then realise the effects of the substance.
Sometimes, the reality dawns after a wake up call. After a drastic or life changing event occurs such as an accident, job loss or divorce.

Why Addiction Counseling is Necessary

No one would use drug and alcohol treatment facilities if it was that easy to quit using drugs and alcohol and to beat an addiction. Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol cause both a physical addiction and a mental addiction. That means addiction counseling is required to help addicts overcome the problems and this counseling requires a lot of focus, time and motivation.

How Does Addiction Counseling Help?

Addiction counseling helps addicts in a lot of different ways. Generally, addicts have a lack of self-esteem and don't have good communication skills. That may be why they began to use drugs or alcohol and what started their addiction.

Addiction counseling can teach addicts how to start valuing themselves again. They do this using many different methods that help the addict start to develop good self-esteem. That may sound complicated, but these are actually simple exercises that trained counselors know how to do with patients and that the average person would not be able to do on his own.

There are a lot of ways to help addicts learn to better communicate with people around them, for example. Generally, the new skills are taught slowly and using a series of steps so the addicts don't start to feel pressured and overwhelmed and want to quit.

Experts at addiction counseling is also able to teach the addicts the basics that they have forgotten, like taking care of their physical health. These people need help learning about the right way to eat and what vitamins they should take. They are often unaware of the dangerous effect drugs and alcohol have on their body and their overall health.

Addicts who attend an inpatient rehabilitation program will be able to learn and apply these new skills every day under the watchful eye of an expert in addiction counseling. That will help the addict start to see his real value and encourage him to work toward improving his overall health.

After addicts start to become more self confident, improve their ability to communicate, and learn how to care for their physical health, they will be ready to face the problems from their past. Addiction counseling helps addicts face these issues in a safe environment. If addicts can't get over their past issues and problems and live in the present, they won't be able to stop using drugs or alcohol. Addiction counseling is a great tool for anyone with an addiction

CANCER

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth, invasion that intrudes upon and destroys adjacent tissues, and sometimes metastasis, or spreading to other locations in the body via lymph or blood.A tumor is caused when cancer cells multiply large masses of tissue. When a normal cell transforms into a cancer cell the genetic material (deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA) of a cell is changed, or mutated. Tumours are formed over decades or a certain amount of years, because of this it is very susceptible to form into a cancer cell as time goes along. Most cancer occurs after the age of fifty, yet some are detected earlier in life, however, it varies.
In some cases tumors are located in one area and in such cases the tumor can be removed through surgery. These are benign tumors as they cause little harm, malignant tumors are the hostile tumors, ones we should look out for.Wild cell growth turns into cancer when it is exposed to cancer causing substances otherwise called carcinogens, genetic effects or viruses.
People get lung cancer by smoking tobacco which contains carcinogenic substances.Carcinogens include chemicals, the sun's ultra violent rays and radiation. However, the common causes of cancer could be narrowed down to genetic hereditary cause(chromosomal abnormalities or disorders) or environmental cause. About 5-10% of cancers are directly due to hereditary genetic factors. The remaining 90-95% of cases are due to environmental factors, such as old age, lifestyle choices, tobacco use, dietary choices, obesity, infections, radiation, lack of physical activity, and environmental pollutants. These environmental factors cause or enhance non-hereditary abnormalities in the genetic material of cells. Cell reproduction is an extremely complex process that is normally tightly regulated by several classes of genes, including oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Hereditary or acquired abnormalities in these regulatory genes can lead to the development of cancer.
Definitive diagnosis of cancer requires the microscopic examination of a biopsy specimen. Most cancers are curable through procedures such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery but it all depends on the type of cancer and the extent of the disease.
Recent findings reveal that the overall risk of developing cancer increases with age.In 2007,13% of all the deaths was caused by cancer and the number of cases is rising as more people live to old age.
Cancer is defined by the type of cell that the tumor resembles or the tissue or organ they begin to form and is therefore presumed to be the origin of the tumor.
Cancer can be prevented by doing the following:

¬For smokers the best way to avoid getting lung cancer is to stop smoking.

¬Avoid being in the sun for lengthy periods, too much exposure to the sun can cause cancer

¬Eat low fat diets

¬Shun from alcohol as much as possible

¬Do not have unsafe sex

SLEEPING INTO BEAUTY

Sleep is absolutely essential for healthy skin.Sleep deprived people appear less beautiful and more tired.Good sleep makes the skin firm, glowing, colourful, dry and better at retaining moisture.Improper sleep therefore causes saggy, loose, pale, colorless, dry and flaky skin.
An individual's sleep history plays an integral part in the perception and judgements of their attractiveness.Adequate sleep has effects on one's physiological, cognitive, and behavioural functionality.
There are several processes that occur during sleep that are attributed to healthy skin.
During sleep, the production of growth hormone is at it's peak. The hormone speeds the absorption of nutrients into the body tissues and aids in the healing of tissues throughout the body. There is evidence that skin regenerates faster at night than during the day.
Sleep also prevents and lessens the severity of wrinkles in the neck and face,at least temporarily. This is due to a shift in body position-lying down diverts the force of gravity.Increased sweating in the body, including the face during sleep, offers a moisturizing effect on the skin.
Sleep has fundamental effects on stress.Sleeping negates the bad effects of cortisol, the stress hormone.Stress has detrimental effects on skin tone and is associated with hair loss, skin patches, and skin tone and skin inflammation.Chronic stress harms the body's ability to repair itself.
Appearance of the skin can have a major impact on an individual's daily activities, self esteem, mental wellbeing and social relationships because of it's conspicuous visibility.Facial skin is of particular importance in human social communication and body image and even minor imperfections can have an often disproportionately major impact on mental health and quality of life.
Organising the highest quality sleep possible is well worth the effort. And quantity doesn't equal quality as one may sleep for many hours, but if the sleep is not deep enough,or if the sleep cycle is disturbed, adverse impact to the skin is still greater.
Seven-eight hours is recommended sleeping time, however, young children and teenagers may require more or less deep sleep depending on numerous factors.A simple way to gauge the quality of sleep is to see how refreshed you are when you wake up.Day time sleepiness and fatigue is common in individuals with disturbed sleep.
A good night's sleep is dependent on a sufficient amount of deep sleep and sleep efficiency.Frequent episodes of being awake, smoking, alcohol dependency, chronic illness like hypertension, being overweight, mental disturbances, excessive light or noises and bed discomfort are common factors affecting the quality of sleep.
Some behaviours are also detrimental to adequate sleep. These "inadequate sleep hygiene" behaviours includes irregular sleep schedules, frequent or prolonged daytime naps, staying on one's bed for non-sleep related activities and sleeping with earphones on.

SEX LINKED DISEASES

PRE IMPLANTATION SCREENING FOR SEX SELECTION
Pre implantation screening for sex selection is a scientific technology used to identify genetic defects in embryos created through in vitro-fertilization (IVF) cycles.
This procedure is necessary where both or one of the parents of a child (embryo) has a known genetic abnormality. However, this treatment is also used to diagnose fertility problems.
IVF has been used to reduce the number of children born with inherited diseases. So far it has recorded a 99% success rate.Sex linked diseases affect more males than females.Consequently,to avoid it, couples giving birth to boys with the disease have to find a way of giving birth to girls. With this technology, the doctor is able to make this happen by selecting the embryos without the affected sex chromosomes leading to the birth of a healthy child. This technology can also be used to assist couples with only boys or girls, to give birth to girls and boys respectively through the selection of embryos with the female XX chromosomes or male XY chromosomes.
Sex linked diseases are those inherited through one of the sex chromosomes, in most cases the X chromosome. There are two forms of sex linked diseases:X linked recessive diseases and X linked dominant diseases. The most common sex linked diseases are:Haemophilia –an individual has a problem with blood clotting.Duchenne-a muscular dystrophy i.e. muscle degenerative disease.
Females have the XX chromosomes and males have the XY chromosomes. A child inherits one chromosome from each parent, with the mother giving the chromosome and the father giving either the X or Y chromosome. If the father‘s fertilizing sperm carries the X chromosome, it’ll unite with the mother’s X chromosome to result in the XX pair ,which is a girl. If the father’s fertilizing sperm carries the Y chromosome, the resulting combination brings forth a boy. This means that it’s the man’s sex chromosome that determines a child’s gender.
An abnormality on the X chromosome of the mother results in a genetic related disease in the boy and not the girl. There are two reasons for this:Firstly, the mother always gives the male child the X chromosome and the father gives the Y chromosome.Secondly, in the case of a girl, she becomes a carrier but doesn’t get the disease. This is because the work of the defective X chromosome of the mother is carried out by the X chromosome from the father.
Girls always inherit the other X chromosome from their fathers and can only get the disease if both parents have sex-linked diseases.Women rarely get these diseases and end up being carriers who pass on the disease to their sons. Males have only one single X chromosome hence their susceptibility to the disease, since the X in the men doesn’t have a corresponding good gene in Y to cancel out the defectiveness.
Studies show that women with defective X chromosomes are very likely to pass it on to all their male children hence the IVF procedure.IVF involves a procedure of retrieving the eggs and the sperm, then fertilizing them in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are subjected to the Pre-Implantation Genetic Screening for sex selection to identify and transfer in to the woman’s womb only those that will result in the birth of a healthy baby.
DID YOU KNOW?
It is advisable for couples who want to give birth to girls that :the man and woman need to capitulate a few days to ovulation and then stop 24 hours before the onset of ovulation.
Y sperms move fast and die faster the X sperm that results in a girl. So if you have intercourse before ovulation, the Y or boy sperm would have long died by the time the egg is ready for fertilization. This means the X or girl sperms ,which can survive up to 3 days will be the only ones surviving to fertilize the egg.
For those who want a boy, the sex should take place at the onset of the ovulation and there after up to 24 hours after the ovulation-If relations occurs during ovulation, the likelihood of the child being a boy are high since the Y sperms move faster and reach the egg ahead of the X sperms.

Good Health with Nutritional Supplements

Nutritional Remedies for Depression

Most people opt for anti-depressants when feeling blue or tense. The fact of the matter is that the side effects of anti-depressants pose a greater danger than leaving depression unattended. The idea of nutritional supplements as depression remedies is gaining more approval by the day.
The fact that food can alter your brain's complex bio-chemistry is the reason why nutritional medicine works so well for depression.Recent studies show that the effects of Prozac - the most commonly used anti-depressant medication, are limited and this flaw has led to the consideration of natural approaches to depression.
Your brain, nervous system and neurotransmitters are all made from nutrients.Correcting nutritional deficiencies could help alleviate depression.
Anti-depressants are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).They are meant to address the miserable feeling experienced by depressed persons.SRRIs keep serotonin ,often called the happy hormone ,in circulation by preventing it's break down.A depressed person is almost likely to be low in serotonin.By preventing it's breakdown,SRRI's don't actually raise serotonin levels but stall the breaking down.Since the rate of production of serotonin in depressed persons is low,a better alternative would be a protein derived supplement called 5-HTP(5 hydroxy-tryptophan).Like Prozac,it enhances the activity of serotonin, but it does this by producing more as opposed to preventing its breakdown.
Furthermore, unlike Prozac, there are no side effects such as insomnia, nausea, dry mouth, and loss of libido;not to mention the risk of suicide.5-HTP has been proven to be more effective in treatin depression than traditional anti-depressants.
Depression is also associated with unmotivated and apathetic feelings. While serotonin influences moods, its the neurotransmitter dopamine that influences motivation. The raw material for dopamine is an amino acid called L-tyrosine.Did you know contraceptive pills can lead to depression because they deplete tyrosine levels?
Another way to help balance your moods is through blood sugar control.A diet that's too high in sugar can make you more prone to emotional ups and downs. This is because the body absorbs sweet foods fast and causes your blood sugar and endorphin(feel good hormone)levels to rise.
The problem is that the surge is followed by a crash.Though it is normal to opt for more sugar products, this leads to more blood sugar crashes and wilder mood swings. To break the cycle, avoid very sweet foods altogether and opt for fruits to satisfy your sugar cravings.

Mysteries Of Sleep

Our bodies are synchronized with the 24 hour cycle of day and night through a biological clock known as the circadian rhythm. Our body temperature rises as it dawns and drops as it approaches dusk.
Altering one’s sleeping schedule throws the biological clock out of phase and the circadian rhythm is interrupted causing insomnia and a sort of jet lag.
There’s a biological rhythm during our sleep-a cycle of five distinct sleep stages we pass through during the night.
Stage 1 sleep which lasts about 2 minutes and in which you experience fantastic images. One can easily be awakened from this sleep.
Stage 2 sleep is characterized by a more relaxed state and periodic bursts of brain wave activity-it lasts about 20 minutes.
Stage 3 sleep lasts up to 30 minutes and it is hard to be woken from this sleep.
Stage 4 sleep is usually characterized by a deep sleep where we may talk or walk in our sleep and children are seen to wet their beds. After one hour of deep sleep you go back up the ladder through stage 3 to stage 2 and for some 10 minutes your brain waves become active, your heart rate rises, your breathing becomes rapid and your eyes dart around in momentary bursts of activity under your closed eye lids. This episode is the rapid eye movement sleep usually referred to as REM.
Although the motor cortex is active during REM sleep, it’s neural messages don’t reach your muscles, which are very relaxed-except for an occasional finger twitch, you are essentially paralysed. You can’t be easily awakened .REM is usually referred to as “paradoxical sleep”, since internally your body is aroused but externally your body appears calm.
The rapid eye movement announces the beginning of a dream. The common morning erection stems from the last REM period of the night which occurs before one awakens.
As the night wears on, this sleep cycle repeats itself and the REM sleep becomes progressively longer. An average night sleep consists of 100 minutes of REM sleep.
WHY DO WE SLEEP?
Sleep commands about a third of our lives. The major effect of sleep deprivation is sleepiness. Other effects are diminished immunity to disease, irritability, misperception and inattention.
In a few rare cases, brain diseased people have lost their ability to sleep and consequently died.
Sleep restores body tissues-during deep sleep the pituitary gland releases a growth hormone .As adults advance in age they release less of this hormone and spend less time in deep sleep.
It is recommended that a healthy human being should sleep for at least 8 hours. However, not every one needs 8 hours of sleep. Age is usually a determining factor in the amount of sleep one requires. Infants spend at least two thirds of their day asleep whereas the elderly barely sleep for more than 4-5 hours.
SLEEPING DISORDERS
1.Insomnia-a natural and adaptive response to stress characterized by an abnormal lack of sleep. The two common sought after remedies for insomnia are pills and alcohol and they aggravate the problem by reducing REM sleep. Moreover, when the use of pills or alcohol is discontinued, the insomnia worsens.
2. Narcolepsy-people with this disorder suffer periodic overwhelming sleepiness at the most inopportune times.
3. Sleep Apnea-a disorder where you stop breathing while sleeping. After an airless minute or so the sleeper begins to snort in the air for oxygen. This sequence is repeated all night. Children who don’t resume breathing suffocate and die of “sudden infant death” (SIDS).
4. Night Terrors-The person -often a child- might sit up or walk around, talk incoherently, experiencing a doubling of heart and breathing rates and suffer frightening images which are not remembered the following day.
TIPS TO AVOID INSOMNIA
-Relax before bed time.
-Avoid rich foods around bed time. Milk is good as it aids in the manufacture of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that facilitates sleep.
-Sleep on a regular schedule i.e. rise at the same time and go to sleep at the same routine time.
-Avoid naps.
-Reassure yourself that temporary loss of sleep causes no great harm-most of those who suffer insomnia, tell how they stay all night without shuttering an eyelid when they actually don’t remember falling asleep.

Essence of Water

Water is one of the precious gifts of nature. It is an essential and major component of all living things on earth.Water is one of the essential nutrients to humans.Though one can live for weeks without food, one can only survive a few days without water.
Water is versatile i.e.it can be used effectively both within and without. It can be used in liquid, solid or steam. It can be used hot, cold or lukewarm, depending on the need.
Water is the largest constituent of the human body.About 60 to 70% of the total body weight consists of water.
Functions
It helps in the absorption of food through the intestinal tract.
It keeps blood in a liquid state thus enabling easy circulation even in the tiniest blood vessels.
It maintains the body temperature constantly at 98.4 F in all weathers and keeps the skin moist and cold.
It keeps the mucus membrane moist and helps to secret different fluids in various glands of the body.
It helps the kidneys to remove unwanted body waste like urea and salt in the form of urine. It also helps in the removal of body wastes through lungs as water vapour, through skin as perspiration and sweat and to a small extent through the large intestine as faeces. It is estimated that as much as 37 gallons of fluids are daily filtered off from the blood and restored to the body by the kidneys, only when there is proper proportion of water in the blood.
Water Intake
Water consumption is mainly through drinking water, other fluids and the water content in the food consumed. Some of our common vegetables contain as much water as milk and even more.Thus,100 grams of melon, tomato and radish contain over 90% of water against only 87% of water contained in milk.
The body itself generates water by the combustion going on in the system.
The rate at which water is eliminated from the body must be replaced by its intake so as to maintain the balance in the system-Running and other strenous exercises cause a great loss by perspiration and through the lungs. This loss has to be replaced by a drink or food.
Any great variation in the normal quantity of water in the body interferes with the vital processes and causes acute distress.Loss of water occurs regardless of whether we drink or not.So if we dont drink enough water the blood thickens and the kidneys fail to deal with it efficiently. This may lead to accumulation of poisons and lead to death.
Symptoms such as headaches, nervousness, loss of appetite, digestive disturbances and many more irritations occur due to lack of the necessary amount of water in the body.
For the maintainance of good health,an adult should take eight to 10 glasses of pure, fresh water daily, whether one fells thirsty or not. This quantity is enough to flush the body and meet all internal needs. However,it is bad to drink excess of water since it weakens the kidneys and stomach.
Drinking water along with meals is not healthy,as it dilutes the digestion(gastric) juices and hampers digestion.Water should be taken half an hour before or one hour after a meal.Drinking a glass of water early in the morning after brushing your teeth,is also good for your health as it helps in saliva formation which together with useful enzymes helps in the effective cleaning of the intestinal tract.
Bathing
Invisible perspiration carries noxious substances with it and while the water evaporates, the poisonous substances are left on the skin surface.A bath is necessary not only to wash off these poisonous substances off the skin but also for keeping the skin in a healthy condition.
The essence of water is great. It is found to be the secret behind youthful skin, helps prevent dehydration and is the remedy for many disorders. It's scope is wide and it would be impossible to cover it within this short brief. However, one thing is certain, water is life.

Raw foods for longevity and good health

The food we eat has a profound effect on our health and longevity.Latest researches show that food can provide health, vigour and vitality, and free us from various diseases,or it can make us unhealthy and miserable.
Before the discovery of fire, man ate raw foods as provided by nature. After fire came into existence, man started cooking food.Cooking of natural foods led to their debasement and destruction.Further loss of nutrients started taking place when man started refining and processing natural foods. This has inevitably led to ill-health and variety of preventable diseases.Man can still save himself by avoiding too much reliance on unnatural refined foods ,processed foods and cooked foods.
Benefits of Raw Foods
Normal Functioning of the Body
Raw foods have certain nutritive constituents that serve as building material for the construction and renewal of cells, produce energy to put these cells into motion and give warmth to the body and supply raw materials to the specialized cells needed for their productive activities.Natural nutrition ,as provided by nature ,thus ensures the normal functioning of all body organs.Cooked foods force human organs to work at about three to four times their normal capacity, bring about premature changes in them, cause various ailments and shorten the life span. Those who eat raw foods make use of the digestive organs at about one fourth of their potential capacity. As a result, their organs are never overloaded or fatigued. The overloading of the digestive organs results in over working of several accessory organs like the heart, liver, and the kidneys. The additional work perfomed by these organs soon has the effect of tiring them out and putting them out of action prematurely. This eventually causes ill health and reduces the life span of a person by several years.
Balancing the body chemistry
The tissues and cells of the body are composed of 16 chemical elements. The balance of equilibrium of these chemical elements in the body is an essential factor in the maintainance of health and healing of disease. The acid-alkaline balance plays a vital role in the balanced body chemistry. All foods after digestion either leave an acid or alkaline ash in the body depending on their mineral composition.
The normal body chemistry is approximately 20 percent acid and 80 percent alkaline. To maintain this acid-alkaline balance,it is essential that one should eat 80% of alkaline forming foods and 20% of acid forming foods.Fresh, raw, uncooked fruits and raw vegetables are rich in mineral salts which are necessary for neutralizing acid waste products.Fresh fruits and raw vegetables are hereby called purifying foods. In cooking foods, the mineral salts are lost to a large extent.
Antioxidant Effects
Many of the health problems are due to the perversity of oxygen. So far, scientists have linked destructive oxygen reactions to at least 60 different chronic diseases, as well as to aging itself.
Raw foods like fresh fruits and raw vegetables, especially the deep colored ones, contain strong antioxidants. When these foods are consumed in liberal quantities, the antioxidants contained in them are infused into the tissues and fluids where they help resist the oxidant invasions.
Curative Power of Raw Foods
Hippocrates(460-357BC),the father of medicine, once said “let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food.”The former part of the sentence is for the sick whereas the latter is for the healthy.Hippocrats fully believed that natural foods have unlimited power to sustain health and restore it when lost.
The adoption of raw eating can thus free mankind from all diseases. Raw foods contain all the essential vitamins, minerals, trace elements and other constituents, whereas it is present in small amounts in refined and cooked foods.
